Non-Rev Nightmare!

Last week I decided to take a trip to east coast from the west coast. Given the flight benefits I have at NewCo Airlines (NCA), I thought it will be cool to fly to east coast for free and say hi to my friends out there. However, I forgot the fundamental teaching of my idol "Spiderman" -
"With great benefits comes even greater problems".

Here is how my weekend looked like:
Phoenix - Philly - Newark - Hartford - Philly - Phoenix.

I was excited and nervous at the same time. Just like a girl before for her first high school prom. Excited, that I was going to non-rev (non revenue passenger) and nervous as to how this flying will unfold. For starters reading this, a non-rev can fly if and only if there is space left after the flight if filled with customers who paid for the flight.

Going east was awesome. I got on a red-eye on Friday night from Phoenix to Philly pretty easily. But the story is not over. I got a middle seat, sandwiched between 2 over-sized passengers. I was like a McDonalds burger - "thin patty" between these 2 giant buns (Are u listening McDonalds?). I had been reading on the Wall Street Journal that some people were supporting the call for having these bigger passengers buy 2 seats. After that trip I am a big YES for that effort. However, there was a brighter side to being sandwiched between these giants. In the morning, the flight was pretty cold inside. You guessed it right! I was so warm and cozy. Gross as it may sound, was still comfortable.

So I reached Philly and from there to Newark and there to Hartford pretty easily. I was so happy that my entire bill so far on air tix was 0.00. woot woot!

Hartford was so much fun! Meeting with old friends was awesome. It was also the first time in my life that I saw a DUI check post. Cops all over. I do agree that it was a good effort catching all those DUIers, however their strategy was totally out of place. Did I say strategy - the fav word of any MBA. Coming back to their effort, I definitely felt that they can use some consulting services to hone their placement - "McKinsey.. are u listening? New Business .. wohoo".

After all this fun ended, came Sunday - the day to travel back to the desert. My flight was scheduled to depart Hartford at 1:15 pm. However, the NE weather played a spoil sport. Flights started getting delayed and some cancelled. The revenue passengers started to roll over into next flights and boom! I could not get onto the flight to Philly until 5:30 pm. Finally, I reached Philly at 6:30 pm. Now the toughest part. Getting back from Philly to Phoenix.

All flights were full. The worst part, all airlines cease their operations to west coast by 7pm, however because of weather, all flights were delayed by a couple of hours. I was like - "OMG, I am gonna die!". I made plan A, B and C.
Plan A - Fly to Vegas at 8 pm and take early morning from Vegas to Phoenix
Plan B - Try to get onto last Phoenix flight at 8:30 pm
Plan C - Fly to Chicago and see where I can go from there

The ultimate aim was to fly south or west.

7:50 pm: I was still trying to get onto the Vegas flight (which was almost full) when gate agent announced that flight had some maintenance problem and it wont depart until 10 pm.
7:55 pm: I decided to make a sprint for Plan B and try to get a seat on the almost full flight to Phoenix.
8:10 pm: Reached the other concourse and tried my luck.
8:15 pm: I got the last available seat on the flight to Phoenix.
8:16 pm: I was the king of the world!

I reached Phoenix at 11:30 pm right on time for my bed.

I think everyone who non-revs has to go through this kind of pain, it makes you more resilient and a better planner.

Morale of story:
Satisfaction of flying 0.00 > Problems of flying 0.00

Story so far..

Its been since I blogged. Sorry to all those who missed me. Since I blogged last time, I have moved a long way. I graduated! Holy crap.. did I say "graduated". Its a great feeling to be done with studies "FOREVER". However, believe it or not, I am missing school now. Here is the list of things I miss the most:
  1. Sleeping until 12 p.m
  2. Playing XBox Halo with my homies until 3 am
  3. Smacking Default (Homie#1) and AliG (Homie#2) at Halo
  4. Going to the beach and swinging on the rings
  5. Chillaxing at home
  6. Beating the crap out of my roomie at ping-pong (Although I must admit that over time he has gotten better)
  7. Going to Stir Crazy Coffee place (@Melrose and LaBrea in LA)
  8. Eating at Gabys in Culver City
  9. And yeah, of course. Going to school and talking to friends (san the study part)
That was a wonderful part of my life which I am sure I am gonna miss forever. Since graduating, I moved on to work for NewCo Airlines. At first, even I was surprised, how can I do this. From media to aviation, OMFG!

Seems, I have moved on since then. The benefit of flying free is something which has bonded me with NewCo Airlines. However, this free flying has some fine prints. Details in the next blog.

Be tuned in for my next entry! Till then ciao.

Somalia Dilemma: To be or not to be!

A lot has recently unfolded in the horn of Africa. Somalia, a generally lawless country, which has been plagued by violence and human rights violation, shot to the front page of every newspaper. The reason: they dared to mess with Uncle Sam’s interest.

The sequence of events which unfolded was amazing. I am not claiming to be a clairvoyant or a military strategist here. But I actually thought about this rescue tactics when Capt. Phillips was abducted by the pirates. 3 snipers aim together at 3 pirates and kill all of them at once.  My friends Ali G and Default from Halo will be so pleased with this tactics. They can snipe you in any terrain with any kind of movement, be in Xbox or PS3.

But coming back to the question of repercussions of these actions, here are my 2 cents. I have always stood with my ideology that the only language these people understand is the language of force. But I may not be so correct after all. While a military solution is quick and prudent in the short term, in the long term it brings with it insurgency and painful violence. The US is already experiencing it in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Another front in Somalia, NO NO NO. My tax $$ can be put to better use than going after pirates in Somalia’s heartland.

Let me throw some light on where this all started. Somalia, lawless state, didn’t have any coast guards or Navy to protect its rich marine resources. The result was that big corporations from around the world came into fish the rich waters. The frustration among the poor people who were not getting compensated was growing and that led to formation of these pirate groups. Now what do we do. Let’s get into the typical MBA 2x2 matrix.

By now you must be wondering where I get my news sources. I would say that please make use of the freedom of press we are having here. Thank god that I am able to source news from various parts of the world be it CNN or Aljazeera. Read the following 2 stories and you will know how news is tailored to different parts of the world:

Take that China!

So turning back to the Q. What is America getting into? Lets see again with MBA structure.

Ooooh! It sends jitters down my spine thinking what happens if McKinsey consults for the military. All these frameworks! God save the world.

So what do we do.. I dont know. But this is a great business opportunity, for people who are tired of wall street. Invest your money in these kind of economic developments. Somalia's strategic trade location will give unique advantages to shippers. These advanatges so far has been used by the pirated for their gains!!

Gosh! that was intellectual. My next blog will be on Beauty and the Brown. (Why are brown guys attracted to blonde chicks!!)

Watch out. Your friendly neighborhood navster.

Hello World!

Dear World,

Its been nice knowing you since the past 28 years. Now get ready to be taken over.

Ha! Don't worry. I don't think I am ready to take over the world.. yet! But hey there, thanks for logging into my first blog post. In this edition, I would like to share with you, why am I getting into blogging anyways. Seems such a douche thing to do. After all, whats all about sharing life chronicles with the world. Where is privacy when we need her. Or... ooh... privacy is having some private moments of her own.

You must be wondering why I designate privacy as "her". Since time immemorial, our better species (by now you might have my sex!) has had a great concern regarding privacy. Hence. my arguements. So let me get back to my point. Why blogging. (As of now you might have noticed that I have an ADD too)

Blogs! I always hated it. But here I am. This story began a few months ago when I started working for a start up in LA which focussed on blog world. The more I worked in this sphere also known to the geeks as blogosphere, the more I became interested into it. And here I am now. woot woot!

By now you must be wondering as to why... WHY... did you waste time in reading this blog. Its for your own good, coz if you dont I am gonna haunt you. LOL

Be sure to tune in next for some insights into my crazy life.

Your friendly neighborhood Navster.
